Probably the most “niched-out” theme from Woothemes is the new Real Estate theme simple called “Estate”. The features they have included in this theme are incredible. Everything from locations, images, and more. Everything is put into custom post types (new in WordPress 3.0) so it is very simple for a Real Estate agent to go into the WordPress back-end, upload a new listing with complete information, and have it posted professionally on the website.

It’s more expensive than their other theme for sure. At $200 it’s got a hefty price tag (theme wise). But if you think about the amount of things that are included in this theme you’ll realize that making something similar to this would cost somewhere around the $10,000 mark if you hired a programmer and designer to put it together. So really it’s a pretty major bargain.

Last time I took a look at Headway I wasn’t impressed. Now they have come out with a new version and actually included/fixed a lot of the things I had written about last time. The new Headway (1.6.5) is vastly improved on the previous version and I definitely recommend it if you are looking for something to help you design a simple blog without touching any code.

The layout is very user friendly now with the access panels being on the left hand side in an external, stationary sidebar. There are also new features like background images, header images and more. There’s tons of options and features you can add right from the Visual Editor- and it’s all point and click.

The help and documentation is also way better than it used to be with helpful articles filling up the forums and consistent help from people who know how Headway works. Big improvements here.

Looking for a wicked way to display events but don’t want to change up your whole theme to do it? Check this sick plugin out- it’s call GigPress.

It lets you enter new shows, dates, or gigs (whatever you wanna call em) and include everything from ticket-buy links to google maps and more! This is the most complete event listing plugin I have come across. It even records venues in it’s databse so you can easily re-enter information simply by selecting it. It also allows people to download the events right into their calendars on their computers! Pretty amazing. Check it out – it’s totally free man.

Facebook is growing like mad and right now it is the biggest site on the web! That means more of your user base is likely to be on Facebook – and finding ways to connect to your audience via your website is a really good idea.

Check out this plugin called “Fotobook” that allows you to pull your images from Facebook to your WordPress blog. It’s really easy to set up and even uses Lightbox to show the images. It’s nice and tidy and easy to set up.

On its own this plugin only pull simages from a user profile – so your personal Facebook Images. But usually, you will want to pull photos from a Fan page right? This would even allow your fans to upload images to your website – in a round about way. I have been looking to set up an online store for a while now and a few plugins and themes for WordPress have come to my attention. But the question was – is WordPress really made to be a shopping platform – or should we keep it limited to blogging? So I also looked at Magento and a few other shopping cart systems to see what works best. At the end of the day I personally don’t want to have 2 different logins to manage both my store and my website – so using a WordPress plugin is probably the best option.

Then, there is the difference between an ecommerce “theme” and an ecomerce “plugin”. The e-commerce themes are pretty awesome on their own – but I already have my website built and I want to fit the store around that design – without needing to redo everything. So a plugin makes the most sense for me.

The Shopp plugin is the best one I have found so far. It has everything I want to set up a store. I especially like the idea of having coupons because I can distribute those on Facebook or at events to get people to actually check the store out and prompt them to make a purchase. Coupons are a great way to do this so I like the fact that the option is there. Also there are shipping, tax, and other options for each product.

It really did just wrap itself around my website design and got my store up and running fast. I’ll post a link here when I have the whole thing ready to go.

Let’s say you are in the market for a WordPress theme. You find a really great WordPress Premium Theme which will cost you somewhere around a hundred bucks. But a quick Google search will likely allow you to find free versions of that theme. Bingo! You saved some money and got what you need! But….

When you download a theme from a source other than the actual creator of that theme, you have NO guarantee that the theme will work properly, or that it isn’t filled up with some sort of back-door or malicious code that can destroy your entire website.

For example, I was playing around with WordPress and quickly realized that a theme can easily OVERWRITE any part of your database – without even needing to be logged in!!! What that means is that you could install a theme, and it will delete every blog you ever posted. Or worse – it can CHANGE your blogs – meaning all your hard work could suddenly be destroyed or changed. Imagine if after you installed a theme all your posts were changed to spam links. Unless you have a backup of the database, kiss your website, google rankings, and audience goodbye.

Another reason to get the theme from only the theme creator is that they will often provide upgrades and updates when you download from them. Take the company Woothemes for example: they have recently upgraded their entire back-end for their themes making it REALLY easy to use and expands your capabilities incredibly. If you download a theme somewhere else, you won’t get that upgrade.

Keep that in mind when you think you might be getting a “deal” by downloading a theme elsewhere.

Being an affiliate is a lot like working for commission. The more you sell other people’s products, the more money you make. The question is though, should you ever write a “bad” review of a product someone is paying you money to promote? Or do you simply become another “yesman” by ignoring problems and overselling?

With bills to pay and a rough economy, affiliates definitely feel the need to capitalize on every opportunity. Sometimes that means making a product seem better than it is. However, potential customers are starting to realize B.S. when they see it. The internet is flooded with get rich quick schemes and people trying to cash in. A good consumer knows the difference but a lot of people don’t.

It then becomes a question of ethics in business. I would argue that being honest is well worth it. A good, honest product review makes you more credible and more likely to grow your business rather than just have 1 time buyers. Providing a valuable service to consumers is what will keep making money. If you constantly pull “bait and switch” ad campaigns, your life as an online entrepreneur will most likely be short-lived.

Another positive about honest reviews is that it keeps product creators feeling the need to improve on their products – which makes for better products – which are easier to sell – and everybody wins. Innovation is inspired by overcoming or solving problems. But if affiliates JUST advertise how “great” a product is without showing pros as well as cons it wont inspire that change and growth – change which has the potential to be awesome.

If your theme calls for a cool flash-based header, or you want really sweet photo galleries on individual WordPress posts, check out Slidepress. It’s a free plugin that allows WordPress to create photogalleries in Slideshowpro. Slideshowpro is one of the best Photo Gallery flash applications in the universe and I love using it. Slideshowpro isn’t free but it’s worth the money (about 40 bucks) – and the plugin to hook it into your WordPress is free.

Using this plugin you can easily fit Slideshowpro into any WordPress theme. If you want a cool theme check out some of the sweet themes over at Blurbia.

I like to find stuff that really helps people who are designing themes for WordPress. This one is called “Thematic” and it’s another really cool idea for WordPress theme development.

Basically its a building tool for WordPress which allows for on-the-fly editing much like Thesis or Headway. But get this: it’s totally free. Pretty sweet. It’s worth checking out at least.

Another cool idea (which I wish Headway and Thesis would provide) is the pre-made themes that can be edited using Thematic. You can buy “child themes” which are pre-made and you can edit them quickly and easily using the Thematic builder. This is something that Headway and Thesis could both take a lesson from. There are a bunch of pre-made themes available on the Thematic website which could potentially save a lot of time and get you started faster.

WordPress has changed the world of web design. Since it is free, open source, and really awesome it has become the most used blogging system on the net. It has allowed people to get websites up and running faster and cheaper than ever before.

Are your posts too cheap?
There are some who would argue this is a bad thing, however. They say that allowing anyone anywhere to post on whatever they want only fills internet with a lot of useless crap. People don’t need to be as choosy with what they put on their blogs because it is so easy to do. Back in the day adding or changing something on your website was hard, took a lot of time, and was very costly. This meant that you would only put up stuff that you felt was really important and you would make sure you did a good job of posting it.

One of these arguments comes from Smashing Magazine in this article. Basically, the article states that normal WordPress blogs are boring because they use the same formatting on every post and that once the website is designed, everything falls into that.

Consistency counts.
There is definitely truth to the fact that on a normal WordPress theme the posts look similar. In fact it’s the entire idea behind CSS stylesheets. I for one would say that this is not a bad thing. There are major differences between print and the internet. It’s one of the things my college professor drilled into our heads in web design 101. (While I find his website to be very dull – and it doesn’t use WordPress..there is some truth to what he was trying to say)

Basically there are 2 things involved in any blog post:
1: The content: What the post is about
2: The design: What the post looks like

Content is King.
I would argue that the most important part of any blog post is the content: what the post is about. Being a flash designer for several years I learned from project after project that you can make something that looks really cool and people will be pretty impressed. But if it only looks nice there is no real need for people to come back ’cause they’ve seen it already. The thing that will keep people coming back to your website is the content.

Sometimes, less is more.
Sometimes that means the design has to take a backseat. Think of all the crap at WalMart where the packaging costs more than the thing you bought. And you need the jaws of life to get the product out of the package! How annoying is that? The same rule applies on the net in this case. You don’t want the coolness of your design to cover up the content.

Finding a balance.
If your target audience primarily lives on their iPhones, you will need to make sure that your site will show up properly on the iPhone. Or if they get their information from RSS feeds. These are cases where too much design can get in the way. However, if your audience is primary design-people who have 40″ iMac screens, design might be everything! There are a lot of different things to consider.

The line between content and design is something that can be debated and probably differs from website to website. The key is finding the right balance for you. Think of your target audience. Consider your content. Think of how much time you have on your hands. Every situation will be different.

Hey there, well – Jeff (@jeffwtm) and myself (@tylershick) have been designing and developing sites with WordPress for quite a while now. We developed our first WordPress site on version 2.2.3. Things were a bit different back then, but we saw potential. We’ve continued to do client sites using the platform.

Q. What got you started in the theme development business?

We saw a gap we thought we could fill. There have been a number of successful theme shops, but none that really made the kind of product we would want. We’ve attempted to position ourselves as the Apple to their Microsoft, focusing on higher quality design, more functional code. The old “quality vs quantity” issue.

Q. Do you generally have a target audience for your themes, most companies target just web designers, are you trying to target other such as newbies?

I guess certain themes are tailored more to certain uses than others – such as Melora, which is better suited to blogs than magazines or storefronts. Though in general I’d say our target audience is anyone looking for a theme that will last. We’re not really a great fit for the person who needs a new theme every month.

Q. What are some of your favorite things to do outside web design stuff?

I’m a sports nut. I love just being active and running around. I love people too and enjoy serving and investing time into others. Jeff is a film junky. He lives in LA and has been known to write a thing or two.

Q. We know this might be Top Secret but do you have any other entrepreneurial projects in the works you can share?

We’re always coming up with crazy ideas. It’s just filtering the good from the not as good

Q. Do you have any quick tips or advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs?

Do what makes you happy and NOW is the perfect time to pursue that. Also try to have enough money for sandwiches.

I’m pretty disappointed with the Headway Theme. As an affiliate of theirs I wanted to write a really great review to help people get know about Headway. But after testing the theme I just can’t find a lot of good reasons to use it.

The idea is good.

I think the idea behind Headway is genius and that it could have a lot of potential in the future. (That is possibly something it has in it’s favor: you get future releases of Headway forever when you buy.) So maybe the next release will be better – but for now….

Get ready to code.

The sad but true reality of the so called “Do it yourself” themes is that there’s no way to get around coding. As much as they would like to make you think otherwise, the same goes for any “Do it yourself” theme like Thesis, Headway, and WP-remix. (That said, I have found Headway to be generally better than both Thesis and WPRemix.)

Flexibility is lacking

While you can make small customizations with Headway, major changes still need to be done from the code. Luckily WordPress has a built in Theme Editor which allows you to change code without needing to save and upload it.

However, if you are using the built in code editor that comes with WordPress – it begs the question: Why would I download the Headway theme? And to be honest – thats a pretty good question.

When I set out to write this review I was excited to see how Headway would change the WordPress designing experience – but I found that it doesn’t really change a whole lot. It seems cool on the outside but is severely lacking what it appears to promise. It’s a classic case of overselling and under delivering. The “bait and switch” – which kinda sucks.

The Support

After 3 hours of reading the documentation and playing around with the theme I felt like I had no stronger of an understanding on how to use it than when I had started – and to be honest I don’t have time to be posting questions in a forum. As someone who knows how to code CSS, flash, PHP, and has a strong understanding of WordPress – I found Headway to be counter intuitive and hard to learn.

Another note about the support: The forums go largely unanswered. After browsing some of the open questions I noticed there were many unanswered ones that were several months old. Who can wait months to get a question answered? Also, these forums are only available to members – meaning Google can’t access them either and the general public can’t get a sense of the support until after they buy!

If you are familiar with Firefox you might be aware of a plugin called “Firebug” which allows you to inspect elements of the page by rolling over them. It is much easier to use Firebug and manually change the code than it is to use the Headway system.

The layout

Another thing that was frustrating was the layout of the panels there are for editing the site. (See image for example)
There are so many panels that they cover the entire page – making it difficult to clear through the clutter on the screen to see what it looks like.

Headway makes more sense where a theme MUST be coded from scratch. But even then, unless you make backup copies of the CSS it doesn’t appear that you can save the setup of Headway.

For example, after I installed the theme and made some changes I decided to switch back to my original theme for a while. When I had some time later in the day, I switched the Headway theme back on. I realized at that point that nothing I had done previously was saved as it went back to the default installation. Pretty scary…

Bottom Line

Headway, Thesis, and other “Do it yourself” themes are a pretty cool idea. But when the rubber hits the road they just don’t cut it. I recommend finding a pre-made WordPress theme from a reputable company like Woothemes and modifying it manually using code to fit your design.

Good parts of Headway:

-It is pretty simple to change things like text, colors, and sizing.

-Easy to add header

-The idea behind the “leafs” is pretty good.

My wishlist for future releases of Headway:

-Get rid of the floating panels in the design view and make them more stationary in an exterior area off to the left (much the same as the back-end of WordPress). Right now there is to much clutter

-Make everything more editable and intuitive. For example: The option for a post image thumbnail was a good idea – but the lack of ability to edit it’s sizing is a pretty major setback design-wise. Also, how to choose things like “the excerpt” vs showing the full post are not very clear.

-Allow for other basic CSS properties like background images.

-Improve the documentation on the website to be more clear

-When saving the changes you have made, it is very slow to update and also resets all panels – like the “leafs” panel going back to “Disabled”. It would be nice if this ran faster and didn’t put as much of a strain on the server.

-Provide a backup option so the theme layout can easily be saved to a hardrive.

We follow all of the premium theme developers and recently noticed some great themes coming from a new kid called “RichWP” We wanted to find a bit more about RichWP and the owner Felix Krusch so here goes!

Q. For those who don’t follow you and might not know, how long have you
been interested in design and development with WordPress?

I developed my first WordPress theme, named Aalglatt, to start a German blog about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) back in December 2005. That theme was just a modified version of the famous Green Marinée theme by Ian Main but it had its own twists to it. Ian allowed me to publish the mod on my site. Since that day, this theme has brought a lot of attention to my little German blog, causing me to change the focus of that site to report about the template and theme markets.

Q. What got you started in the theme development business?

Because my free themes began bringing lots of free traffic to my blog, I soon began to monetize it with several theme and template affiliate programs. This gave me a good overview of the market and I saw what was working and what was not.

In the beginning of 2009, I booked a telephone consultation with Brian Gardner from Studiopress and he patiently answered all of my questions about the WordPress theme market and about starting and running a Premium WP theme label that I had up to that point.

I took all the good advice, locked myself up, designed and programmed six WordPress themes, got my sales pages ready, and launched.

Since then, I frequently give one-on-one support to every customer who writes in. That positions me right on the pulse of what my customers want. This is where the ideas and hints for developing new themes and improving the current ones come from.

Q. Do you generally have a target audience for your themes? Most companies target just Web designers; are you trying to target others such as newbies?

No, I cannot say that I target one special audience. Sure, I developed the photo themes and the gallery functions with artists in mind who want to display their work. I designed the blog themes with bloggers in mind and the business themes aim at small to midsized business customers. Web designers are often buying my themes to cater to their customers, saving themselves time by not having to reinvent the wheel and saving their customers money in return. Newbies are as welcome as experienced WordPress users and developers.

Q. Now that your themes are under the GPL, do you see any change in sales or traffic to your site?

I can’t really say because my themes were licensed under the GPL from the beginning—thanks goes to Brian Gardner for that advice. Besides that, everybody who uses GPL scripts and functions within their themes should release the theme under the GPL. As far as I know, you can only copyright your design and CSS, which is what I did in the beginning, but you should not do that with the other necessary theme files, because they contain WP functions which are GPL.

Giving up protecting my CSS was only a little step for me and being 100% GPL brought me into the commercial theme index on wordpress.org. There is some traffic coming from this index, but it is not a significant amount.

Anyway, it’s great that anybody can do with your themes what they want to do. I mean, selling a developer’s version of your theme that only allows your customer to remove a copyright notice and a link to your site in the footer or to use your theme on multiple sites simply isn’t a good deal. It is not that they give you anything extra, like a more comprehensive options page or other features, which is the best practice for most software developers. Don’t get me wrong, I am a capitalist at heart and I am all about profits. I tried that kind of developer’s license thing with templates for another CMS, too. But giving the customers the best service you possibly can and more importantly, giving them the freedom to do with your products whatever they can imagine definitely brings in more money than any model based on some kind of usage restrictions could ever do.

It might sound completely counter intuitive, but if you don’t cling to your digital products too much and accept that since they are digital products, they will probably be available somewhere on the Web for free, this is actually a great promotional tool.

I mean, you can almost be sure that you are not using the most up-to-date version of the theme, but you use it and learn to love it. Then maybe questions arise and you want the latest version, or your good consciousness kicks in and you realize that I have put a lot of work into a great and affordable product and that the new versions of my themes are rich in features and you can do a lot of stuff with them. In order to get everything out of my themes and also profit from the experience I have as a blogger and Website owner, then you want access to me personally and use the one-on-one email and chat support that I offer with my themes.

So every RichWP.com theme you find out there to download for free is actually an evaluation version of my product—something that software companies have been using for ages as a proven promotional tool.

I will even take it a step further and release free versions of all of my themes within the coming weeks.

Q. What are some of your favorite things to do outside of Web design stuff?

I enjoy traveling and I am thankful that I have been able to visit quite a few countries on this planet so far. A flight to Chile is already booked for February. I graduated with a Master’s degree in geography and I am using what I have learned there to explain what I see and experience on my trips.

Besides that, I love sports, especially swimming. You can meet me at the Olympic Pool in Montreal almost every day.

Q. We know this might be Top Secret, but do you have any other entrepreneurial projects in the works that you can share?

Right now, my focus is on RichWP.com and the WordPress theme market. I have so many ideas I want to realize with RichWP, that it will probably occupy me for some months to come.

I have started a lot of small businesses; some have failed, but some are still earning me good money.

Sometimes just a walk in a park can get me all hyped up at trying another idea and starting a new business. Stay tuned; it never gets boring.

Q. Do you have any quick tips or advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs?

This might sound cheesy, but do what you love to do and focus on it—don’t focus on the money, that will come automatically. Money is just a way of keeping score about what you did right with your business.

If you fail, get up and try again or try something else. Or in other words, how often do you have to play a video game before cracking the high score? How often did you fall before you were able to walk?

We recently had a chance to speak with RBHavesh. He is the original creator of the revolutionary WPRemix theme and is now the owner of an awesome theme company called PremiumThemes.net. Q. For those who don’t follow you and might not know, How long have you been
interested in design and development with wordpress?
A. I created my first wordpress based project in 2006. I loved wordpress
because I am not a programmer and it solved the problem of creating a CMS
for the custom projects I did. In general, web design has been my choice
since I completed my high school education in 1999.*

Q. What got you started in the theme development business?
A. As a freelance web designer, I really needed a recognition back in 2007
because all the work I did was for a web design company in US and as a
result, I was not credited as the designer. I needed to create something
outstanding that gives me recognition.

At the end of 2007, I released WP Remix – one and only of it’s kind theme
that had been a great success. The release of WP Remix provided recognition
and money at the same time.*

Q. Do you generally have a target audience for your themes, most companies
target just web designers, are you trying to target other such as newbies?
A. Small business and Individual professionals are my focus. If you take a look

newbies as well.

Q. What are some of your favorite things to do outside web design stuff?

A. If I reveal, it wouldn’t be top secret, right? But yes, I am also working on

Q. Do you have any quick tips or advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs?
A. Each of us have our own way to get success. What works for me, might not
work for you. Personally, i would say passion, persistence and sincerity are
the sure fire way to success. If you are not passionately loving what you
do, I doubt you’d get success ever.

I design what feels right for me at that moment. We are still to young

We were never anything but GPL (Obox Themes are only 4 months old).

5. What are some of your favorite things to do outside web design
stuff?

I love motorsport, in fact for 8 years of my life I was a semi
professional racing driver. I achieved some really cool things in the
sport but my talent peaked when the recession hit… So I spend my
weekend playing Racing games (you won’t beat me at Gran Turismo) and at
the local karting track.

Marc loves cycling, he has the best kit (Obox branded of course) and the
most awesome bikes. He tries to cycle everyday.

The thing is though, these days our free time is almost non-existent, we
love our ‘jobs’ so much that we spend a huge amount of time at our
desks.

6. We know this might be Top Secret but do you have any other
entrepreneurial projects in the works you can share?

We recently launched our Micro Blogging themes. Tumblr and Posterous
themes all in one package. It was a seven day blitz project and seems to
have taken well with the community and customers alike. I suggest you

Work as hard as you can in what you believe in. 12hr days are child’s
play, if you want to be successful you need to be patient, you need to

sleep. Because any free moment you get should be spent working on your
project.

I went to a Paramore concert last night in Nasvhille TN at the Ryman. While there, I told some kids about the band I play in and they looked it up on their iPhones. The world is getting very connected with the ability to have the internet on your phone. It’s pretty incredible.

But there was one problem: the website has certain elements that are Flash based. None of those elements loaded on the iPhone because Flash isn’t supported. This meant that they missed out on parts of our website simply because they are Flash.

This is something to keep in mind if you are building a website using a theme. There are lots of great looking themes out there that are fully flash – but what if someone wants to look at your site on their phone – they can’t! My advice is to avoid building your whole website in Flash – and where flash is necessary use it to a minimum.

Key points: Know your target audience. If they are primarily going to look at your site on a computer, flash might be great. But if they are going to look at it from all different types of devices, avoid using technology that isn’t supported by all carriers.

Well okay, maybe it’s not that cut and clear but when it comes to “Do It Yourself” themes, the two leaders are the Headway Theme and the Thesis Theme. So which one is better? Which one is worth your time and money?

Round 1: Customization Control | Winner: Headway Theme
When it comes to customization control, Headway comes out as the winner hands down. Both allow you to create different layouts with the click of a button and re-size them without needing to know PHP code or CSS.

But Headway makes it so easy while Thesis can be a chore. I found myself pretty frustrated when I was playing with Thesis. Headway is set up with a drag and drop style but with Thesis you need to put in the actual numbers and it isn’t as easy to make it the way you want. Even by just looking at the sample themes from Thesis and Headway, Thesis sites all look similar while the Headway themes are much more creative and unique.  The Thesis navigation systems are almost all the same...kinda crappy if you want to make something customized to your design. It’s just too much work with Thesis compared to Headway.

You’ll notice all the Thesis themes look kinda the same. That because it is so hard to customize. Headway Theme allows you much more flexibility in the layout because it is based on leafs rather than just columns. You can custom create leafs for anything and place them anywhere, at any size. Thesis is somewhat limiting in layout in comparison.

Round 2: User-Friendly Back End | Winner: Headway Theme
Headway is much more intuitive and easy-to-use than Thesis in general.  It is much quicker to catch on to the Headway back-end than it is the Thesis back-end. The thesis back-end, while not using code, still feels code-ish. But the Headway theme is all drag and drop, click and re-size. Much quicker learn and easier to use.

The thesis theme code is somewhat neater then the Headway code is – but it isn’t enough to make that much of a difference as the Headway code is still very smart and neater than most other theme code out there.

Have you ever had a difficult client? Someone who wanted full design changes daily or weekly? If you are into web design, sooner or later you will have a client like this. And if you have quoted them a solid price rather than an hourly rate, you could be in for a long haul.

Well it might be smart to deal with these types of clients in a new way – a way that works for them! I would call the “Do It Yourself” (DIY) themes “Site Builders” – because that is really what they work like.

There are a few solutions out there for WordPress which allow people with very basic (if no) knowledge of design or web coding to completely design and customize their websites to their own liking. You can provide an entire site-builder to these clients – and the best part is that it is built on WordPress – one of the best Content Management Systems for websites out there. The whole thing is drag and drop and everything is changeable.

One thing to keep in mind is that a theme from a site like Woothemes or Press75 likely has MUCH better design and layouts as they were built for specific purposes by web designers with training and know-how in design. So a DIY theme might not work in every case – but for certain projects they can be exactly what you need.

The Platform Theme from Obox themes is a great theme for content. It has an entertainment feel like MTV or E! but also a very professional layout. This theme would be great for sites that are news or article driven with images to back the stories up. It has really nice layout in a 3 column design featuring adverts, twitter posts, comments and more. The header is also pretty great with rotating images featuring posts.

One of the sweet parts about this theme are the monetization (money-making) opportunities it easily gives. When they built this theme, they thought of advertising areas that wouldn’t feel like an afterthought but rather feel like part of the fluid design of the page.

The Daily Edition theme for WordPress from Woothemes is a really nice theme based around blogging with images and possible news articles. This would be a great theme if you are posting a lot of new, relevant information daily. (Hence the name)

Think of it like an online newspaper or magazine. It’s design is based around the content – not overly flashy – so it doesn’t distract from the real content you’d be trying to push. But it’s still pretty nice to look at with great formatting for blog images and quick easy access to different categories as well as the newest posts.

Are you a web designer? If so you’ve probably seen or been a part of some website projects that have used Flash. There are a lot of templates out there that are flash based and look pretty great. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when building a website around Flash that might make you think twice.

I myself am a Flash designer and as much as I hate to say it – Flash appears to be dying. Not only has the software itself become unstable and very buggy, it is overly expensive and not very web-friendly. When a website is made with Flash, it won’t get indexed properly by Google and other search engines.

When comparing a website built on a CMS like WordPress or Joomla to a website built with Flash – I can’t tell you how much better the websites are. Flash templates are somewhat hard to customize as they were built by another designer. The main issue however, comes when the client or you wants to make a change to that template. Modifying a file months after you first worked on it can be pretty frustrating. If I could give you a piece of advice designer to designer – use WordPress.

It is much better on all fronts. It is faster to build, easier to maintain, Google indexes it fully, it’s free to use, and there are no expensive programs to buy in order to use it.

Flash is still great for smaller flash projects like headers, widgets, music players, video players etc. But if your client is trying to convince you to use a Flash template to build an entire site, I advise against it.

I had a chance to test out the “Do it yourself” (DIY) Theme that everyone has been talking about lately! It is called “Thesis” and it is a theme that basically lets you configure your entire theme right from within WordPress. Pretty cool idea.

You can manage everything from text to colors to the layout of the site. I was pretty surprised at how powerful it was and how much control over the look and feel of your WordPress theme it gave you.

However, there are definitely things it can’t do as well. In a general sense, you won’t be able to create any original header displays, or get some real custom design without still having some CSS and PHP scripting knowledge. This theme is definitely better for designers or developers with scripting knowlege who have some time to customize their WordPress theme.

When you break it down, this theme costs as much or more than a completely done theme from sites like Woothemes or Obox. If you are going to spend your money on a theme, I would recommend using a completed theme that you know is exactly how you want it – rather than paying the same amount and not necessarily loving the finished product.

However, if you are the type of person who loves to get their hands dirty and have more control over the look-and-feel of your site, than this theme might be perfect for you. But again, keep in mind that some knowledge of CSS and PHP will definitely help.

Pros:
- Easily customize text, colors, layout and positioning of elements
- Great for web designers and developers with some time to customize
- Great help with making a custom theme quicker

Cons
- Lets face it, it can’t do ANYTHING. Don’t expect to make anything happen easily.
- The cost is the same (or more) than a “Completed Theme” that likely looks/works better than something designed though the Thesis Theme.
- You’ll need to put in some time to make this look the way you want
