The guys over at Obox Themes have some pretty awesome Wordpress themes. They also run a video blog TV show called “From the couch” which encourages people to think “Outside the Box”… which is also the idea behind their themes! We wanted to get to know the guys a little better and see what makes them tick:
1. For those who don’t follow you and might not know, How long have
you been interested in design and development with Wordpress?
Hi Everyone, my name is David Pere, founder of Obox. We have been
creating Wordpress themes for about 7 months now. The first Wordpress
site we had to do was in March, for Liam McKay from wefunction. We had
2weeks to do it and we had never seen a line of WP Code in our life.
Luckily Wordpress is quite easy to use, so since then we have always
wanted to get involved in the theme business.
2. What got you started in the theme development business?
We have always wanted to do themes but we used to program in Coldfusion
and didn’t have any experience with PHP. That all changed when we
managed to successfully finish the Wordpress project for Liam.
3. Do you generally have a target audience for your themes, most
companies target just web designers, are you trying to target other such
as newbies?
I design what feels right for me at that moment. We are still to young
in the market to really aim for anyone / any style in particular. If the
design feels right then we will make it a theme.
4. Now that your themes are under the GPL do you see any change in
sales or traffic to your site?
We were never anything but GPL (Obox Themes are only 4 months old).
5. What are some of your favorite things to do outside web design
stuff?
I love motorsport, in fact for 8 years of my life I was a semi
professional racing driver. I achieved some really cool things in the
sport but my talent peaked when the recession hit… So I spend my
weekend playing Racing games (you won’t beat me at Gran Turismo) and at
the local karting track.
Marc loves cycling, he has the best kit (Obox branded of course) and the
most awesome bikes. He tries to cycle everyday.
The thing is though, these days our free time is almost non-existent, we
love our ‘jobs’ so much that we spend a huge amount of time at our
desks.
6. We know this might be Top Secret but do you have any other
entrepreneurial projects in the works you can share?
We recently launched our Micro Blogging themes. Tumblr and Posterous
themes all in one package. It was a seven day blitz project and seems to
have taken well with the community and customers alike. I suggest you
check it out, we have a free Tubmlr/Posterous theme that we are giving
away at the moment.
7. Do you have any quick tips or advice for other aspiring
entrepreneurs?
Work as hard as you can in what you believe in. 12hr days are child’s
play, if you want to be successful you need to be patient, you need to
believe in what you are doing and you need to get used to not having any
sleep. Because any free moment you get should be spent working on your
project.
